program prior to designing and conducting toxicology studies. The purpose of the research concept document is to outline the general elements of a research program that would address the specific public health concerns that prompted the nomination of the substance or issue for study. It may also encompass substance-specific studies that address larger public health issues or topics in toxicology. Additional information about the nomination, review, and selection of substances for study by the NTP is provided at Nominations to the NTP Testing Program (http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/nom). A draft version of this research concept was reviewed by the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors at a public meeting on June 22, 2007 (http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/9741), subsequently revised, and approved by the NTP Executive Committee.

Method development for the determination of diacetyl and acetoin at a microwave popcorn plant.

Separate sampling and analytical methods for the determination of diacetyl and acetoin have been developed to assess workplace exposures at a popcorn processing facility have been described. Diacetyl (NMAM 2557) is efficiently recovered from an Anasorb CMS sampler tube when the composition of methanol in the desorption solvent is 1%, and acetoin (NMAM 2558) is efficiently recovered when the con...

Inflammatory Response and Barrier Dysfunction by Different e-Cigarette Flavoring Chemicals Identified by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry in e-Liquids and e-Vapors on Human Lung Epithelial Cells and Fibroblasts

Recent studies suggest that electronic cigarette (e-cig) flavors can be harmful to lung tissue by imposing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. The potential inflammatory response by lung epithelial cells and fibroblasts exposed to e-cig flavoring chemicals in addition to other risk-anticipated flavor enhancers inhaled by e-cig users is not known. The goal of this study was to evaluate ...

Response to “Comment on ‘Flavoring Chemicals in E-Cigarettes: Diacetyl, 2,3-Pentanedione, and Acetoin in a Sample of 51 Products, Including Fruit-, Candy-, and Cocktail-Flavored E-Cigarettes’”

BACKGROUND There are > 7,000 e-cigarette flavors currently marketed. Flavoring chemicals gained notoriety in the early 2000s when inhalation exposure of the flavoring chemical diacetyl was found to be associated with a disease that became known as "popcorn lung." There has been limited research on flavoring chemicals in e-cigarettes. OBJECTIVE We aimed to determine if the flavoring chemical d...
